Age: 37 years
Height: 6 ft

Bowling Style: Right-arm Medium

Education: St. Joseph’s College, Colombo

Dimuth Karunaratne stands tall—both literally and figuratively—as one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable Test match openers. A calm, composed left-hander, Karunaratne’s cricketing journey began at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, the same institution that shaped international stars like Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera. His early promise was evident when he featured in the Sri Lanka Under-19 setup alongside his college teammates.

He made his first-class debut for Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in 2008 but had a modest beginning, initially batting in the middle order. However, the following season saw a transformation. Promoted to the top of the order in 2009, Karunaratne flourished, notching up his maiden first-class century against Colts Cricket Club and amassing a staggering 1186 runs at an average of 56.54 that season.

His consistent performances earned him a spot in the Sri Lanka A team, and he made headlines by scoring 184 against South Africa A, which featured bowlers like Vernon Philander. Though he played two ODIs in 2011, scoring 4 and 60, his real strength lay in the longer format of the game.

Karunaratne’s reputation grew as a specialist in grinding down world-class bowling attacks with his patient and technically sound approach. In 2012, he impressed again with scores of 83 and an unbeaten 150 during an A-team tour of South Africa. These performances paved the way for his Test debut, where he partnered Tharanga Paranavitana against New Zealand in Galle, replacing the injured Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Over the years, Dimuth has cemented his place as a pillar of Sri Lanka’s Test batting line-up, known for his leadership qualities, consistency, and ability to deliver under pressure.
