The Ministry of Transport and Highways has voiced strong disapproval over the sudden strike initiated by the Sri Lanka Railways Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU), which has caused significant disruption to public transportation and daily commuters.
In an official statement, the Ministry highlighted that the strike was launched over two key demands: the promotion of Station Masters every five years and the suspension of plans for new recruitment.
However, the Ministry noted that earlier this year, the Cabinet had already approved the recruitment of 909 new employees to the Railways Department—including 106 new Station Master positions—indicating progress on the union’s concerns.
Expressing frustration, the Ministry questioned the motives behind the abrupt work stoppage, suggesting that the union may have other undisclosed objectives, using the strike as leverage.
The Ministry concluded its statement by assuring the public that it would take all necessary actions to restore normal railway operations and prevent further inconvenience.
