UK Migrants Face Longer Wait for Permanent Settlement Under New Rules

Migrants already living in the UK may now have to wait 10 years—instead of the current 5—to apply for permanent settlement, as part of a new immigration overhaul announced by the government.

The new policy will affect foreign workers already in the UK, not just future arrivals, according to government sources. A formal policy document and public consultation are expected in the coming weeks.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper raised concerns that current pathways would lead to a sharp rise in settlement and citizenship applications, following a spike in migration since 2020.

Key Changes:

Most migrants will need to live in the UK for 10 years before applying for indefinite leave to remain.

British citizen dependents will still qualify after 5 years.

Some exceptions may apply to those who’ve made notable economic or social contributions.

Critics, including charities and migrants, have described the move as “a betrayal”, saying it changes the rules mid-way for people who’ve built their lives in the UK.

One skilled worker, Isa, said: “This was our life plan. Now I feel completely unwelcome.”

The new rules may bring additional revenue through visa fees, but advocacy groups warn of increased stress, debt, and instability for affected families.
