Land border crossings into the U.S. from Canada took a sharp dive in April 2025, reflecting the ongoing strain in bilateral relations between the neighboring countries.
According to newly released U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data:
Total crossings fell to 2.93 million, down from 3.87 million in April 2024 — a 24.2% decrease year-over-year.
Compared to March 2025 (3.18 million), April also saw a noticeable monthly drop.
Detroit, the busiest northern port of entry, experienced a 15.2% decline in travelers year-over-year, while truck traffic fell from 129,100 in April 2024 to 93,192 this year.
At the Blue Water Bridge, overall traveler numbers dropped, though truck crossings slightly rose year-over-year.
The data reflects how current trade disputes and diplomatic tensions are impacting not just trade, but also tourism, logistics, and everyday cross-border movement.
