Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect on Wednesday (May 7).
The India captain announced his decision on social media, confirming that he will hang up his boots from the Red Ball format.
The announcement follows a period of declining form and mounting pressure, including his omission from the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. Reports indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had already decided to remove him as Test captain ahead of the upcoming England tour.
Rohit took to social media on Wednesday evening and suddenly announced his retirement. Rohit put a Test cap in an image and penned a straightforward and brief message. “Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit announced on Instagram.
Rohit confirmed that he will continue to play in the 50-over format and it is likely that the India star will be leading team India in it.
