Sri Lanka-Born Cassandra Fernando Re-Elected to Australian Parliament in Key Victory

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — Sri Lanka-born MP Cassandra Fernando has been re-elected to the Australian Parliament, securing another term as the representative for Holt, Victoria. Her campaign focused strongly on easing the cost of living for working families and providing greater access to essential services.

Fernando highlighted her commitment to the community by advocating for:

Free GP visits

20% reduction in HECS debt (saving the average student approximately $5,300)

Three days of free childcare

“These are real savings that will make everyday life easier for families in Holt,” she said in her victory speech.

The Labor MP also graciously acknowledged her Liberal opponent, praising them for a strong and respectful campaign:

“I wish them the very best.”

Meanwhile, La Trobe Liberal MP Jason Wood, who is facing an unexpectedly close race, admitted that broader political issues — including the Trump presidency and pushback against remote work policies — may have negatively impacted the Liberal Party’s performance.
