Aussie F1 Icon Alan Jones Backs Oscar Piastri for World Title, Calls Lando Norris ‘Mentally Weak’

Australian Formula One legend Alan Jones, the country’s last F1 world champion (1980), has thrown his full support behind rising star Oscar Piastri, backing the 23-year-old to win the 2025 world title — and taking a public swipe at his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, whom he labeled “mentally weak.”

Piastri made history with a win in Saudi Arabia, marking his third victory in four races, and becoming the first Aussie since Mark Webber in 2010 to top the championship standings. His calm, composed driving has made him a legitimate title contender, outshining the more experienced Norris.

“He’s got all the attributes of a world champion,” Jones said on The Back Page (Fox Sports).
“He’s very mature, level-headed, and unflappable. He doesn’t talk — he just gets the job done.”

Jones was especially critical of Norris’ mental game, suggesting his self-doubt and negative mindset are liabilities.

“Norris is quick, but mentally, I think he’s weak. When they start talking about mental struggles and doubts, you know you’ve got them,” Jones added.

This comes as former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher also warned that if Norris doesn’t improve mentally, he could be overlooked by rival teams in the future.

Verstappen Endorses Piastri as Title Threat

Even reigning world champion Max Verstappen has acknowledged Piastri’s rise.

“He’s solid, calm, barely makes mistakes — exactly what you need to fight for a championship,” Verstappen said after Piastri’s Saudi win.

As Piastri continues to impress with his quiet determination and consistent performance, many believe he could end Australia’s 45-year title drought this season.
