Colombo, Sri Lanka – April 28:
In a historic moment for Sri Lanka’s maritime industry, the MSC Mariella, the world’s largest container ship, docked at the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo Port yesterday.
Measuring an impressive 399.90 meters in length and 61.30 meters in width, the MSC Mariella hails from Liberia, West Africa and was built in 2023. With a cargo capacity of 240,737 tons, it’s a true titan of the seas.
The vessel is scheduled to load and unload 1,600 containers at the ECT, according to Sri Lanka Ports Authority Managing Director, Ganaka Hemachandra.
“This is a landmark event that positions Sri Lanka on the global maritime map,” Hemachandra said. “The arrival of MSC Mariella is not just a shipping milestone — it signifies Colombo Port’s emergence as a key maritime hub in South Asia.”
This achievement aligns with the government’s long-term vision to elevate Sri Lanka’s port infrastructure and boost international trade.
