Canada Election 2025: Mark Carney’s Liberals Win Amid Global Reactions

Ottawa, Canada – Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has clinched a fourth consecutive term in Canada’s national election, largely shaped by rising tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies and annexation threats.

Despite predictions of defeat, Carney’s leadership under the banner of defending Canadian sovereignty led to a surprise victory. The Liberals are projected to win 169 seats, narrowly missing a majority in the 343-seat House of Commons. The Conservatives trail with 144 seats.

In his victory speech, Carney warned:

“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us — that will never happen. But we must recognise our world has fundamentally changed.”

Carney and Trump spoke after the results, with both agreeing on the importance of sovereign collaboration. A future meeting is planned.

President Trump congratulated Carney and emphasized U.S.-Canada cooperation on trade, immigration, and drug control.

European Union leaders praised the shared commitment to democracy and multilateralism:

Ursula von der Leyen: “The bond between Europe and Canada is strong — and growing stronger.”

Chilean President Gabriel Boric, Australia’s Anthony Albanese, and India’s Narendra Modi echoed hopes for enhanced bilateral ties, even as tensions with India and China linger.

China, in a rare conciliatory tone, expressed willingness to improve relations based on mutual respect.

Former U.S. President Joe Biden praised Carney’s leadership, highlighting shared North American values.
