Yasoja Gunasekera, the newly appointed High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka to Australia, officially assumed duties last Tuesday (22 April) at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Canberra.
In her address to the staff, High Commissioner-designate Gunasekera outlined the Government of Sri Lanka’s key priorities, emphasizing the long-standing and friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Australia. She highlighted the path forward to further strengthen bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in tourism, trade, investment, and people-to-people connections.
Gunasekera also stressed the importance of delivering seamless consular services and reaffirmed that the welfare of the Sri Lankan community in Australia would be a top priority during her tenure. She called for collective efforts by the entire Mission team to achieve these goals.
A seasoned diplomat with over 29 years of experience, Gunasekera is a top-ranking graduate of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service Batch of 1996. She previously served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Indonesia, High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and played a key role in establishing the Sri Lankan Consulate General in Guangzhou, China. Her overseas postings also include New Delhi, New York, and Washington D.C.
Gunasekera holds a Master’s degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University in Australia and an LLB from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. She is an alumna of C.M.S. Ladies’ College, Colombo.
