Pope Francis Laid to Rest at Basilica of St. Mary Major: A Final Act of Compassion

The body of His Holiness Pope Francis was laid to rest yesterday (26) at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, honoring his final wish and departing from centuries of tradition. In a deeply meaningful choice, Pope Francis selected this basilica, located in a working-class district near Rome’s central train station, as his final resting place, symbolizing his lifelong dedication to the marginalized and his profound connection to ordinary people.

A nine-day period of mourning has been declared for Catholics worldwide. Today (27), a special Mass of condolence will be held at St. Peter’s Square, with Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, a leading figure and potential successor to the pope, presiding. The Vatican is expected to announce the date for the conclave of cardinals in the coming days, where a new pope will be chosen to lead the faithful.
