A severe dengue outbreak at the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital has left 166 health workers infected, according to Dr. Kapila Kannangara, Director of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Health Services.
Dr. Kannangara noted that hospital operations have been significantly disrupted due to the high number of affected staff members.
Since January, the Ratnapura district alone has reported 1,465 dengue cases, highlighting the escalating public health crisis in the region.
Across the country, more than 14,600 dengue cases have been recorded in the past year, with Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Ratnapura districts showing the highest infection rates.
Authorities are urging heightened preventive measures as the dengue threat continues to strain healthcare services.
