The Ministry of Education has officially announced that all schools across Sri Lanka will be closed on May 5 and 6, 2025, due to the 2025 Local Government Elections. Regular academic activities are scheduled to resume on May 7, 2025.

As part of the election preparations, schools designated as polling stations must be handed over to the respective Grama Niladharis by May 4. School authorities are required to provide essential resources including tables, desks, chairs, and suitable halls to facilitate polling station functions.
In addition, several schools identified for use as counting centres and for other electoral operations will remain closed for extended periods. Specific instructions regarding these schools will be communicated through relevant education and administrative channels.
The Ministry has urged all Zonal Education Directors and school principals to offer full support in ensuring a smooth and efficient election process.
