Liberal Leader aims to cut U.S. dependency and strengthen Canada’s energy independence through clean and competitive energy initiatives.
Liberal Party Leader Mark Carney has announced a sweeping new energy strategy aimed at reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States and transforming the nation into a global clean energy superpower. Speaking at a gathering in Calgary on Wednesday, Carney outlined a plan focused on energy security, trade diversification, and long-term economic competitiveness.
“As a nation, we’ve played it too safe by relying on the United States,” Carney said at the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Local Union 725. “It’s time to realize our full potential.”

Carney’s remarks come as tensions with the U.S. escalate amid ongoing tariff disputes. While President Donald Trump recently announced a 90-day pause on all new global tariffs—excluding those targeting China—Canada continues to suffer under existing tariffs on aluminum, steel, and the automotive sector. Additionally, Trump introduced a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and potash exports earlier in March.
In response, Carney’s strategy includes replacing imported U.S. energy with Canadian-produced sources, bolstering domestic clean energy infrastructure, and investing in low-carbon conventional energy. His plan also highlights investments in critical mineral projects, improved recycling-based extraction, and the launch of a “First and Last Mile Fund” to better connect clean energy initiatives to supply chains.
“We’re committed to getting these projects built faster while creating good-paying jobs,” Carney emphasized, suggesting the plan will both strengthen the economy and position Canada as a leader in the global transition to clean energy.
