Former Sri Lankan Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne is reportedly set to retire from Test cricket following the second Test against Australia which will be his 100th Test match.
Although Karunaratne has not officially confirmed his retirement, sources indicate that his illustrious career in the longest format is nearing its conclusion.
The second Test against Australia is scheduled to commence on February 6, 2025, at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. It is expected to be an emotional farewell for Karunaratne, who has been a pillar of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup for over a decade.
Since 2015, Karunaratne has been the most prolific Test opener in world cricket, scoring more runs than any other player in his position. With 15 centuries and 34 half-centuries to his name, he has demonstrated remarkable consistency and resilience. His achievements include being named in the ICC Test XI three times—an accolade no other opener has matched in the last ten years.
As he approaches his 100th Test, Karunaratne’s total Test runs in 99 matches tallies to 7,172.
