The iconic Sri Lankan tusker, ‘Deegadanthu 1,’ known for its majestic presence and extraordinarily long tusks, has tragically died due to electrocution. The tusker, aged between 40 and 50 years, came into contact with an illegal electric fence set up in front of a house in Andiyagala, Hinguruwewa.

Renowned as one of the most magnificent elephants in the Kala Wewa National Park, Deegadanthu 1 was a beloved figure among locals and an attraction for tourists from around the world. Its untimely death not only marks the loss of a national treasure but also underscores the pressing need to address the dangers posed by illegal electric fencing to wildlife in Sri Lanka.
