Hungry lunchtime shoppers have been spotted queuing down the street for an unusual promotion in the CBD of Melbourne, one of Australia’s biggest cities. Patrons flocked to the new Nando’s store in Richmond on Tuesday after news broke that hundreds of free meals were being given away.
Just 90 minutes after the promotion began, Nando’s reported that it had already distributed 660 quarter chickens to a whopping 2,640 patrons, prompting the restaurant to order more supplies to meet the high demand. This promotional event marks the grand opening of the new location, celebrating Nando’s expansion amidst a challenging climate for hospitality businesses due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
In a bid to strengthen its presence, the popular Portuguese-style chicken chain plans to open seven more restaurants in the next 12 months, aiming to create 1,000 new jobs within three years. “In our quest to become Australia’s favourite dining destination, we’ve refined our menu and invested in the design and décor of our restaurants,” said Tom Blackburn, Nando’s head of brand and communications.
Blackburn expressed excitement for the new store, which he hopes will “grab the attention of food lovers and locals” with its unique dining experience along the banks of the Yarra River. Patrons visiting the Richmond store can enjoy a complimentary quarter chicken and chips from 11 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, with similar promotions expected to roll out with future openings.
Nando’s has a rich history, originating in Johannesburg, South Africa, when Portuguese-born Fernando Duarte partnered with South African Robert Brozin to open the first restaurant. Since then, the chain has expanded to 30 countries with over 1,200 outlets, gaining particular popularity in the UK.
As Nando’s continues its ambitious expansion plans, the Richmond opening is just the beginning of what looks to be an exciting chapter for this beloved chicken chain.
