Delhi’s Role in West Asia Peace: PM Modi Meets Iran’s President Pezeshkian Amid Regional Crisis

In a significant diplomatic encounter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Kazan, Russia, during the BRICS Summit. This meeting, the first between the two leaders since President Pezeshkian assumed office in July following the tragic death of his predecessor Ebrahim Raisi, comes at a critical juncture with tensions escalating in West Asia.

Crisis in West Asia: A Call for De-escalation

The West Asia conflict has intensified, with Israel and Iran exchanging threats of retaliation. The region is further destabilized by the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Iran’s recent ballistic missile offensive against Israel has provoked strong reactions, with Tel Aviv vowing a fierce response.

Amid this turmoil, Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s “deep concern” over the situation and reiterated the nation’s stance advocating for “dialogue and diplomacy” to prevent further violence. President Pezeshkian echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for peace and highlighting India’s potential role as a mediator, given its strong ties with both Israel and Iran.

India’s Unique Position as Peace Broker

India has emerged as a potential peace broker in the West Asia crisis. With longstanding relationships with key players such as Israel, Iran, and other Middle Eastern nations, New Delhi is positioned to facilitate dialogue. PM Modi’s recent interactions with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and now with Iran’s President Pezeshkian reflect India’s efforts to engage all sides.

This is not the only instance where India is playing the role of a mediator. Prime Minister Modi is also actively involved in efforts to de-escalate the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, using India’s diplomatic leverage with both Moscow and Kyiv.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties: Chabahar Port and INSTC

Beyond the immediate crisis, the leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties between India and Iran, focusing on strategic projects like the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Both projects are critical for enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation, with Chabahar being particularly crucial for Afghanistan’s redevelopment.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), sharing that the discussions with President Pezeshkian were productive and that both leaders reviewed the full range of India-Iran relations. The sentiment was echoed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who revealed that PM Modi congratulated President Pezeshkian on his electoral victory and welcomed Iran’s formal inclusion in the BRICS forum.

Acknowledging India’s Support

President Pezeshkian acknowledged India’s support in facilitating Iran’s entry into significant international forums like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS. The leaders expressed a commitment to continuing collaboration on global platforms.

The meeting between the two leaders concluded on a positive note, with Prime Minister Modi inviting President Pezeshkian to visit India soon—a gesture which the Iranian leader graciously accepted.

As the West Asia crisis continues to unfold, India’s diplomatic efforts under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership may play a crucial role in de-escalating tensions and fostering peace in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
