Vincent Perera, a renowned Sri Lankan attorney, was officially sworn in as the new Attorney General of Seychelles yesterday at State House. Perera, whose illustrious career spans multiple jurisdictions, brings a wealth of legal expertise to his new role.
A qualified attorney-at-law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, barrister and solicitor of Fiji, and accredited mediator at the Singapore Mediation Centre, Perera boasts an impressive legal pedigree. He holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Colombo and has served as a legal consultant at the Seychelles’ Attorney General’s Office, heading civil litigation.
In his inaugural address, Perera expressed his commitment to upholding the rule of law in Seychelles, vowing to contribute to its highest standards. He also emphasized the need for change in the country’s legal system, drawing on his experience working in other jurisdictions to “beef up” prosecutors with the necessary skills.
Perera’s vision includes providing his team with the training necessary to stay one step ahead of criminals, ensuring that “guilt shall not escape, nor innocent suffer.” As the head of the Attorney General’s Office, he will be responsible for providing the government with legal advice, overseeing criminal prosecutions, and ensuring the country’s legal footing in international agreements and complex contracts.
Perera has also pledged to tackle the ongoing issue of case backlogs in the system, leveraging his experience in clearing backlogs to devise a new approach.
With an impressive four-year term ahead of him, Perera replaces Frank Ally, who has held the post since October 2017. As the new Attorney General, Perera is poised to leave his mark on Seychelles’ legal system, bringing a fresh perspective and new expertise to the role.
