Kandy-born dancer and choreographer, Kavya Eriyagama, is making waves in both the local and international dance community while skilfully balancing a career as a lecturer, tutor, and content creator.

Born and raised in Kandy, she attended Gateway College and later pursued her higher education at ICBT, followed by a master’s degree from Next Campus. However, it was her love for dance that truly shaped her path, leading her to move to Colombo to pursue her passion professionally. Today, Kavya is recognized not only as a talented dancer but also as a respected educator and content creator.
Her love for dancing began at a very young age. When she was just three years old, her school teacher saw potential in her and gave her the opportunity to perform at a school concert. This initial spark was enough for her supportive parents and brother to encourage her to pursue formal training in Kandyan and Bharatanatyam dance forms. Over the course of nearly a decade, she honed her skills through relentless practice, with the unwavering support of her family and friends.
Blending Education and Art
While Kavya’s dance journey has been pivotal in her life, she has also found that her educational background has played a significant role in her success. Her studies in speech and drama helped her present herself confidently on stage, while her academic experiences have been instrumental in helping her develop skills in content creation and brand management. Kavya believes that the blend of education and artistry has allowed her to express herself both as a performer and as an entrepreneur.
“Dancing is an art that requires passion above all,” says Kavya. “But it’s the practice, the commitment, and the willingness to learn that develop the skill. YouTube and social media have been great tools for me to refine my work and share it with a larger audience.” This approach has not only helped her build a career in dance but also establish herself as a trusted voice in education.

At the age of 18, Kavya’s journey took a significant turn when an Afghan singer approached her for a production during her school years. What initially started as a hobby quickly evolved into a professional career. Alongside her friend Denathi Pussegoda, Kavya ventured into performance art, creating dance routines that captivated audiences. The duo’s hard work and dedication earned them recognition, leading to more opportunities within the industry.
A major breakthrough came when Kavya choreographed the popular Kella cover song by Yohani. The performance earned widespread praise, with many fans commending her creativity and execution. Kavya is thankful for the opportunity to work with well-known names like Damith, Lavan, and Yohani, all of whom have contributed to her growing success in the industry.

Passionate about skincare, she is actively using her social media presence to promote her interests in beauty, positioning herself as an influential figure in both the beauty and dance industries.
Despite her artistic pursuits, Kavya understands the importance of having a “backup plan.” This is why she continues to work as a lecturer and tutor, ensuring that she has financial security and balance in her life. “I believe in having it all,” she says, “and for me, that means balancing my passion for dancing with my academic career.”

Kavya’s career trajectory is only moving upward. She is eager to collaborate with artists from Maldives and Dubai, exploring opportunities that will take her career beyond Sri Lanka. “There’s so much talent around the world, and I’m excited to be a part of that,” she says.
