Pakistan can’t come to India’s rescue, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team knocked out of T20 World Cup as NZ reach semi-final

New Zealand sealed their spot in the semi-final with a 54-run victory over Pakistan, while India faced a group-stage exit from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

In a critical group-stage match, New Zealand secured a crucial 54-run win over Pakistan to advance to the semi-finals. Their bowlers produced an impressive performance, bowling out Pakistan for just 56 while defending a modest target of 111 runs. Amelia Kerr was the standout performer with the ball for New Zealand, taking three wickets.

India’s elimination from the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 came as New Zealand’s victory ended their hopes of progressing to the semi-finals. India, who had hoped for a surprise Pakistan win, were left disappointed.

Pakistan momentarily kept their hopes alive by restricting New Zealand to a sub-par score of 110/6. Despite the strong showing from the bowlers, the Pakistan batters faced a daunting task. To reach the semi-finals, Pakistan needed to chase down the target within 10.4 overs, while India required Pakistan to defeat New Zealand outright. However, New Zealand’s bowlers shattered both teams’ plans by bowling Pakistan out for just 56 runs.

India’s exit from the tournament was a significant blow for a team that was considered one of the favorites going into the event. They faltered under pressure in key matches against New Zealand and Australia, ultimately finishing with two wins from four matches.

How India Fared in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup
India’s campaign began on a shaky note with a 52-run loss to New Zealand, immediately putting them in a precarious position for a semi-final spot. However, they bounced back strongly in their next match against Pakistan. Thanks to an excellent bowling performance led by Arundhati Reddy who took three wickets, India restricted Pakistan to 105/8 and chased down the target in 18.5 overs, despite a sluggish start from the batters.

The momentum continued in India’s following match against Sri Lanka. Half-centuries from captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana powered India to a massive 82-run victory — their largest win in T20 World Cup history by run margin — which helped boost their net run rate.

However, in their final group-stage game against defending champions Australia, India crumbled under pressure once again. Australia, despite missing captain Alyssa Healy, eked out a narrow nine-run win. Grace Harris, filling in for Healy, top-scored with 40, while Tahlia McGrath added 32 as Australia posted 151-8 after opting to bat.

India’s chase was led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored an unbeaten 54. Together with Deepti Sharma (29), she put up a 63-run stand for the fourth wicket, taking the match into the final over. However, Australian bowler Annabel Sutherland delivered a spectacular final over, giving away just four runs and taking crucial wickets, which ultimately sealed India’s fate.
