In a candid admission, Coalition foreign affairs spokesman Simon Birmingham has acknowledged that there are “limits” to what Australia can do to assist Australians stuck in Lebanon as the conflict intensifies. Despite escalating Israeli strikes and explicit warnings from the government, only a handful of citizens have taken up opportunities to flee.
Senator Birmingham expressed concerns that those who choose to remain in Lebanon have made this decision despite being aware of the risks. He emphasized that it is unrealistic for the government to expect to foot the bill for their evacuation.
The Albanese government has taken steps to secure seats on flights and is urging Australians to leave Lebanon, but the response has been underwhelming. Currently, only 2300 of the estimated 15,000 Australians in Lebanon have registered for evacuation assistance.
Many Australians in Lebanon are choosing to stay, putting themselves and others at risk. This development has sparked concerns about the safety risks associated with remaining in the war-torn region.
The Australian government’s efforts to facilitate evacuation efforts underscore the gravity of the situation in Lebanon. As the conflict continues to escalate, it remains to be seen whether more Australians will take up the opportunity to flee and what steps the government will take to ensure the safety of its citizens in the region.
