4 additional bodies found in Himachal Pradesh 56 years after Air Force aircraft crashed.

On February 7, 1968, an Indian Air Force plane carrying 102 people took off from Chandigarh, destined for a destination that would never be reached. The AN-12 aircraft, carrying passengers and crew, vanished into the mountains, leaving behind a trail of despair and uncertainty. The search efforts that ensued were exhaustive, with the Indian Army launching multiple expeditions to locate the wreckage and recover the bodies of the victims.

Despite the best efforts of the rescuers, only five bodies were recovered from the crash site until 2019. The remains of the 97 others, including the crew and passengers, remained lost in the icy terrain of the Rohtang Pass, Himachal Pradesh. The crash was a significant loss for the Indian Air Force, and the families of the victims had to live with the uncertainty and grief of not knowing the fate of their loved ones.

recently, the Chandra Bhaga Mountain Expedition, led by the Indian Army, made a breakthrough in the search efforts. On September 20, 2022, the expedition team recovered four more bodies from the crash site, bringing the total number of recovered bodies to nine. Three of the new bodies have been identified as Malkhan Singh, Sepoy Narayan Singh, and Craftsman Thomas Charan, while the fourth remains unidentified.

The news has brought some comfort to the families of the victims, who have been waiting for decades for answers about their loved ones. The Army has informed the family of the unidentified victim and has assured them that the search efforts will continue until October 10. The recovery of the bodies is a significant milestone in the search efforts, and it is a testament to the dedication and bravery of the Indian Army.

The crash of the Indian Air Force plane remains one of the most significant air disasters in Indian history, and the search efforts have been ongoing for over five decades. The recovery of the bodies is a significant step towards closure for the families of the victims, and it is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
