‘Life changing’: $1.2 billion jackpot up for grabs in record-breaking lottery

Aussies have the chance to get their hands on the largest-ever lottery jackpot in Australian history, with over $A1 billion up for grabs in a record-breaking draw this week.

The prize in the US Mega Millions has reached an eye-watering $A1.2 billion – a prize six times greater than Australia’s largest lottery jackpot – and Aussies have a chance at the massive prize via local lottery ticket seller The Lottery Office.

“With the jackpot climbing rapidly it’s only a matter of time before it is won,’’ Lottery Office chief executive Jaclyn Wood said.

“We are crossing our fingers that the winner will be an Aussie claiming what would be the biggest lottery win in Australian history.”

The Lottery Office, which is wholly Australian-owned, allows Aussies a shot at the US prize pool through its government-licensed USA Mega Lotto.

When a player buys a ticket in USA Mega Lotto, the Australian-owned ticket seller buys a matching ticket in the USA Mega Millions and pays any winnings to the player.

“We’re Australia’s ticket to the world’s largest official lotteries,’’ Ms Wood said.

“Winning a jackpot of this magnitude would be a truly life changing event opening opportunities are only limited by the imagination.”

The massive draw comes after nobody claimed the $1.1 billion up for grabs in last Saturday’s Mega Millions drawing. However, six players managed to walk away Division 2 prizes of almost $1.5 million.

The $200 million Powerball jackpot, claimed by two players in February, currently holds the record for the largest prize offered by an Australian lottery game.

Of Aussies who have previously tried their luck with the USA Mega Lotto, West Australians have been the luckiest with the state recording the highest percentage of winning tickets purchases.

But NSW came out on top when it came to the total value of wins paid, the biggest single win and the total number of wins.

Queensland’s Surfers Paradise was the country’s luckiest suburb when it came to the USA Mega Lotto with more winners than any other.

Tickets in the next USA Mega Lotto draw are available through The Lottery Office website and app until 10am Wednesday AEST.
