Sri Lanka’s largest team in history ready for Paris 2024 Paralympics

Among those heading to Paris, Sri Lanka presents a Paralympic team that promises to make waves.

Led by the charismatic Samitha Dhulan, captain and javelin specialist in the F44 category, the delegation boasts six athletes in athletics, marking a historic milestone for the country.

Indeed, this is the largest athletics team Sri Lanka has ever sent to the Paralympics, and preparation has been intense. “This is the first time that so many athletes from Sri Lanka are competing in these Games, showing the growth of sport in our country,” expressed with pride Colonel Deepal Herath, President of the National Paralympic Committee and Head of Mission for the delegation.

The memory of Tokyo 2020 is still fresh. On that occasion, Dinesh Priyantha Herath elevated Sri Lanka to the top by securing the country’s first-ever Paralympic gold medal in javelin. Now, hopes rest on new talents like Nuwan Indika in the 100 metres T44 category, Palitha Bandara in shot put F42/63, and Pradeep Somasiri in the 1500 metres T46.

“Our team comes with the firm intention of following in Herath’s footsteps and proving that success was no fluke,” commented national coach YK Kularatne, who, alongside Sajith Jayalal, Pradeep Nishantha, and Dhanushka Perera, will join the athletes as part of the coaching staff.

However, the springiness of this team lies not only in their preparation and talent. MAS Holdings, the official sponsor, has designed a ceremonial kit symbolising Sri Lanka’s pride and resilience. Inspired by the vibrant local wildlife, the uniform features intricate prints of endemic animals such as the Sri Lankan leopard and jungle fowl. “This uniform is not just clothing; it is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of our people,” emphasised Colonel Herath. Each of the eight athletes will carry not only their effort but also a piece of their heritage and culture in every competition.

The journey to Paris begins on 25 August 2024, when the Sri Lankan delegation will depart for the City of Light, ready to make their mark at one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events. These Games will not only be an opportunity for these athletes to prove their worth but also to inspire future generations, showing that with determination and hard work, dreams can become a reality.

Paris 2024 is shaping up to be an unforgettable event, where inclusion, diversity, and personal triumph will be at the heart of every competition. The Sri Lankan team, with its blend of experience, youth, and determination, is ready to proudly represent its nation on the global stage. “We are ready to give it our all and show that Sri Lanka not only participates but competes at the highest level,” concluded Colonel Herath, reflecting the confidence and hope of an entire nation.
