Sri Lanka 236 all out against England in first Test

Sri Lanka recovered from 6-3 to be dismissed for 236 by England on Wednesday’s opening day of the first Test at Old Trafford.

Dhananjaya de Silva top-scored with 74 and Test debutant Milan Rathnayake, a fast bowler batting at No 9, made 72 after Sri Lanka had lost their first three wickets for no runs in 10 balls.

Chris Woakes, who struck twice in an over early on after De Silva won the toss, took 3-32 from 11 overs in the first of this three-match series.

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir had figures of 3-55 in 23 overs in what is Ollie Pope’s first match as England captain after Ben Stokes was ruled out with a torn hamstring.
