Johann Peries, a name etched in the annals of Sri Lankan mountaineering history, is setting his sights on a new monumental feat: the Seven Summits challenge. As the second Sri Lankan to summit Mount Everest, Johann’s adventurous spirit and unwavering dedication continue to inspire. He is now embarking on a quest to conquer the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.
In a recent interview Johann has shared profound insights into his mountaineering journey, reflecting on the spiritual and personal significance of his climbs. When asked if the view improves with the difficulty of the climb, Johann responded, “The view doesn’t necessarily depend on the climb. However, a tougher climb brings greater challenges and a deeper sense of achievement.”
Johann’s most memorable view was from the summit of Everest during his second ascent in 2018. He described it as akin to being in an airplane, above the clouds, with peaks rising around him. “It was an extraordinary sight—like gazing into eternity,” he said. “On one side, I saw Nepal, and on the other, China. The horizon seemed to curve, a breathtaking realization of Earth’s curvature. This moment was deeply sentimental, knowing that only about 6,000 people globally have stood at the top of Everest.”
