Pioneering Sri Lankan TV News Presenter Sumana Nellampitiya Dies at 80

The nation is deeply grieving the loss of Ms. Sumana Nellampitiya, Sri Lanka’s first female television news anchor and a trailblazer in journalism, who passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.

Born on May 23, 1944, in Colombo, Nellampitiya’s exceptional talent and charisma were evident from her early years. She pursued her education at Nugegoda Mixed School, Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda, and Gotami Balika Vidyalaya, which laid the groundwork for her illustrious career.

In November 1967, Nellampitiya joined the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, where her distinctive voice quickly became a hallmark of the national media landscape. As one of the few women in radio at the time, she broke new ground and made significant contributions to the field over a remarkable five-decade career.

Nellampitiya also made history as Sri Lanka’s first female television news anchor, revolutionizing the visual media industry. Her programs, including ‘Pibidena Ga’yaka Parapura,’ ‘Forens Vasana 7,’ and ‘Ovalteen Pana Podi,’ remain beloved and memorable to Sri Lankan audiences.

Her impact extended beyond presenting; she was a versatile media personality skilled in program production and played a crucial role in promoting Sri Lankan culture internationally. Her work in Sinhala language programs around the world enhanced Sri Lanka’s cultural presence on the global stage.

Sumana Nellampitiya’s legacy in journalism and media will be remembered fondly, and her contributions have left an enduring mark on the industry.
