Chamari Athapaththu Shines with Historic Century in Women’s T20 Asia Cup

In a spectacular display of cricketing prowess, Sri Lanka’s captain Chamari Athapaththu made history by scoring the first-ever century in the Women’s Twenty-20 Asia Cup. This achievement marks Athapaththu’s third century in T20 internationals, further solidifying her reputation as a formidable all-rounder.

Athapaththu’s unbeaten 119 runs came off just 69 deliveries, featuring 14 boundaries and 7 sixes. Her exceptional performance led Sri Lanka to a commanding total of 184/4 in their 20 overs. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Athapaththu’s decision paid off as she steered her team to a semi-final spot in the tournament.

The ACC Women’s Asia Cup cricket tournament, which commenced on Friday (19) at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, has seen some thrilling matches. Hosts Sri Lanka started their campaign with a dominating seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh Women on Saturday (20), showcasing their strong form.

Facing Malaysia in their latest match, Sri Lanka’s playing eleven included Vishmi Gunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilaksha Silva, Anushka Sanjeewani (wk), Ama Kanchana, Inoshi Priyadharshani, Kawya Kavindi, Sachini Nisansala, and Shashini Gimhani, alongside the star performer, Chamari Athapaththu.

Malaysia, on the other hand, entered the match with their own aspirations, needing a win to stay in the tournament after a convincing loss to Thailand in their opening fixture. Their lineup featured Winifred Duraisingam (capt), Wan Julia (wk), Elsa Hunter, Mahirah Izzati Ismail, Ainna Hamizah Hashim, Aina Najwa, Amalin Sorfina, Suabika Manivannan, Aisya Eleesa, Dhanusri Muhunan, and Nur Izzatul Syafiqa.

As the Women’s Asia Cup progresses, all eyes will be on Sri Lanka and their captain Chamari Athapaththu, who continues to inspire with her remarkable performances.
