Colombo High Court Grants Bail to Former MP Hirunika Premachandra Amid Ongoing Appeal

In a recent development, the Colombo High Court has granted bail to former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra. The decision was made by Judge Amal Ranaraja on July 22, following a bail application filed by Premachandra’s attorneys. This ruling comes after the Attorney General’s Department raised objections to the bail application earlier in July.

Premachandra, a former parliamentarian with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment for her involvement in the abduction and wrongful detention of a youth in Dematagoda on December 21, 2015. She was found guilty on 18 charges and was ordered to pay fines totaling Rs. 20,000 per charge. Failure to pay the fines could result in an additional six months of imprisonment for each charge.

Premachandra has contested the verdict by filing an appeal with the Appeals Court, seeking to overturn the Colombo High Court’s recent decision. Her legal team argued that she should be granted bail while the appeal is under consideration.

The court’s decision to grant bail reflects the ongoing legal processes and potential for further review of the case. The release on bail allows Premachandra to remain free while her appeal is being processed, providing her an opportunity to contest the verdict and seek acquittal.

This case continues to capture public interest due to Premachandra’s prominent political role and the serious nature of the charges against her. The outcome of her appeal and any further legal developments will be closely watched.

For updates on this high-profile case, stay tuned as the legal proceedings unfold.
