Mirabai Chanu – India’s Underdog Ready to Shine at the Paris Olympics

As the Paris Olympics approach, India’s weightlifting star, Mirabai Chanu, is not among the favorites, but that has never deterred her. Despite recent recovery struggles, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist is determined to make her nation proud, thanks to the unwavering support of her coach, Vijay Sharma.

After a grueling three-hour training session, Chanu rushes to the sauna, her fatigue evident. Yet, mention “Vijay sir,” and her eyes light up. “Whatever I am today is because of him,” she says from the massage table at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. Chanu’s bond with Sharma, which began a decade ago, is built on trust and mutual respect. Sharma’s detailed approach to weightlifting, focusing on every minute aspect, has been instrumental in Chanu’s success. “People think weightlifting is just about muscle and power,” Sharma says. “It’s all rubbish. You need a scientific approach to ensure injury-free peak performance.”

Their partnership was tested at the Rio Olympics when Chanu failed to register a single clean and jerk lift. The debacle could have ended careers, but instead, it strengthened their resolve. “When I look back, that Rio blow made our relationship stronger,” says Chanu. Sharma, too, acknowledges Chanu’s unwavering belief in him during tough times.

Their professional relationship often spills into personal realms. Sharma keeps in touch with Chanu’s family in Manipur, especially during the state’s recent ethnic violence. Chanu, in turn, has visited Sharma’s home in Ghaziabad, forming a close bond with his family. During long training camps in the USA, Chanu occasionally cooks for Sharma, who helps with dishes and chopping vegetables.

Their greatest triumph came at the 2017 World Championships, where Chanu’s victory ended India’s 22-year wait for the title. As they prepare for the Paris Olympics, Sharma is optimistic. “We’ve fallen so many times that now there’s no fear,” he says. If Chanu’s body holds up, she might just achieve something extraordinary for India.
