Record Number of Indian-Origin MPs Elected in UK General Election

In a historic turn of events, a record 28 Indian-origin members of Parliament have been elected to the House of Commons in the UK’s recent general election. This unprecedented representation showcases the growing influence and integration of the Indian diaspora within British politics.

Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak led the charge for the Conservative Party, securing his seat in Richmond and Northallerton, Yorkshire. Despite the overall poor performance of the Tories, who lost over 200 seats to a Labour landslide, Sunak’s victory provides a glimmer of hope. “On this difficult night, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support. Since I moved here a decade ago, you have made me and my family feel so at home and I look forward to serving you for years to come,” said Sunak, dispelling rumors about his future in politics.

Other prominent Indian-origin Conservative MPs who retained their seats include Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Claire Coutinho, and Gagan Mohindra. Additionally, Shivani Raja gained the Leicester East seat, defeating fellow Indian-origin Labour candidate Rajesh Agrawal in a closely watched race focused on preserving the city’s famous Diwali lights.

Labour, benefiting from the overall election wave, saw a significant number of victories among Indian-origin candidates. Veterans like Seema Malhotra, Valerie Vaz, Lisa Nandy, Preet Kaur Gill, and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi retained their seats. Newcomers Jas Athwal, Baggy Shanker, Satvir Kaur, Harpreet Uppal, Warinder Juss, and others made a strong entry into Parliament.

The Liberal Democrats also had notable success, with Munira Wilson winning back her Twickenham constituency. Independent candidates Shockat Adam Patel and Iqbal Mohamed secured victories in Leicester South and Dewsbury and Batley, respectively.

This election has indeed established a more diverse Parliament, with at least 87 ethnic minority candidates set to take their seats, reflecting the changing face of UK politics.
