Matvei Michkov plans on terminating the final two seasons of his KHL contract, freeing him up to join the Flyers organization for the 2024-25 season, a team source confirmed Sunday.

The Flyers drafted Michkov with the seventh pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The Flyers assumed he would not be available to them until the 2026-27 season, due do his contractual obligations with SKA St. Petersburg. But reports out of Russia in recent weeks suggested that Michkov might be available to the Flyers as soon as next season.

Michkov’s plans to terminate his remaining contract was originally reported by The Fourth Period.

The Flyers had been generally mum on the potential that Michkov could get to them early, including on Thursday when general manager Daniel Briere spoke to the media.

“Maybe a couple weeks after the season when those rumors started swirling, I’d probably say, well, we should know by the end of June, and here we are now getting closer to it and we still don’t know much more,” Briere said. “He has two years left on his contract and if something changes from today until then, we’ll certainly be happy.”

Michkov, 19, spent the bulk of the last two seasons playing with Sochi in the KHL, which is affiliated with SKA. In 47 games in 2023-24, he posted 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points. He played just one game for SKA, going scoreless, before he was assigned to Sochi.
