A new TV series starring two former Top Gear hosts has been announced, but it’s Chris Harris’s unexpected departure from Collecting Cars which has the internet abuzz.
Former Top Gear presenter Chris Harris has announced he is cutting ties with auction platform Collection Cars – a business he co-founded.
Harris posted on Instagram to share the unexpected news, after fans began asking questions about the sudden pause on regular content from Collecting Cars, including its popular podcast, Collecting Addicts.
Launched in 2019, Collecting Cars was founded by Harris and long-time friend Edward Lovett – with the Lovett family owning several new and used car dealerships in the UK.
“A quick note from me. As you might have noticed, I’ve left Collecting Cars – I’m just confirming that – and I have nothing more to add at this time, but I have left Collecting Cars,” Harris said in a short video posted on Instagram.
“However, the question I’m asked most at the moment is ‘Where’s the podcast?’. Well, there is a new podcast coming, and you’ll recognise many of the people on that podcast. I’ll tell you more about that when I have more to share,” he added.
The weekly Collecing Addicts podcast came to an abrupt stop, with the last episode airing on 26 April 2024.
Chris Harris – who also made regular videos for Collecting Cars – also hasn’t made an appearance on the business’s YouTube account since 27 April.
Meanwhile, Chris Harris and fellow Top Gear host Paddy McGuinness have recently announced they will star in a new BBC series together, called Road Trippin, in which they travel across Europe.
In late 2023, it was announced Top Gear would be put on hiatus following a serious crash involving co-host Freddie Flintoff in 2022.
Just three episodes have been announced of the new program, with Harris and McGuinness to visit Sweden, Greece, and Switzerland.
While the internet is abuzz with rumours of a rift between Harris and Lovett, the announcement from the BBC came just weeks after Collecting Cars conspicuously stopped posting content with the famed motoring journalist.
However, Harris was able to produce content for Collecting Cars while he was contracted by the BBC to host Top Gear.
Harris and Lovett sat down with Drive for an interview in February 2024, ahead of a Collecting Cars event in Sydney that month.
“Yes, it was a bit of a pension plan, because I didn’t know when that TV show was going to end – I mean it could have ended at any moment really, that’s the nature of television,” Harris said, after being asked whether the founding of Collecting Cars was a retirement plan.
“I will do more television in the future – I’m very lucky, people are asking to me go and sit down and work out some ideas, and I’m sure I will do some stuff. But right now Collecting Cars is my full-time home for this kind of activity, and I’m really pleased to be doing it,” he told Drive at the time.
A date for the new series Road Trippin has yet to be announced.
