Malaysia Repatriates Over 1,600 Sri Lankan Illegal Migrants

In a coordinated effort between the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia and the Malaysian Government, 1,608 Sri Lankan illegal migrants have been successfully repatriated. This operation, part of Malaysia’s Migrant Repatriation Programme, took place over a two-month period from March 1 to April 30, 2024, and marks a significant achievement in the ongoing collaboration between the two nations.

The Sri Lankan High Commission in Kuala Lumpur issued a statement detailing the operation and highlighting the extensive measures taken to ensure the successful return of the migrants. Prior to the main repatriation initiative, the High Commission had already facilitated the return of 124 Sri Lankan nationals from January 1 to February 28, 2024. This earlier effort brings the total number of repatriated Sri Lankans to 1,732.

The Migrant Repatriation Programme, spearheaded by the Malaysian Government, aims to assist illegal immigrants in voluntarily returning to their home countries. The programme offers legal exemptions and financial aid, making it easier for migrants to go back home. The Sri Lankan High Commission played a crucial role in this initiative, ensuring that Sri Lankan nationals could fully benefit from the programme.

Throughout the repatriation period, the High Commission worked tirelessly to process applications, issue necessary travel documents, and coordinate with Malaysian authorities. Their efforts ensured a smooth and efficient return process for all participants.

Special provisions were made for vulnerable groups among the repatriates, including the elderly, pregnant women, individuals needing medical assistance, and children under twelve years old. This compassionate approach ensured that those in the most need received appropriate care and support during their journey.

In their statement, the Sri Lankan High Commission expressed deep gratitude to the Malaysian Government for their cooperation and support. The success of this repatriation initiative underscores the strong bilateral relationship and shared commitment to addressing the challenges faced by migrants.

The High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sri Lankan nationals in Malaysia, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to safeguard their rights and welfare. The successful repatriation of these individuals is a testament to the effective collaboration between Malaysia and Sri Lanka in addressing immigration issues humanely and efficiently.
