VW has increased Golf R production for the Australian market to meet pent-up demand.
Volkswagen Australia expects to triple the amount of Golf Rs delivered this calendar year after two years of supply shortages.
In 2022, 151 Golf R examples were delivered to Australian customers and 346 in 2023. The brand stopped taking orders for the Golf R in February 2023 after the wait time for the model blew out to more than 12 months due to parts shortages.
But, Ralph Beckmann, Volkswagen Australia’s passenger vehicles marketing manager, told media this week that supply constraints have now improved, and the brand expects to move 1100 cars in 2024. The pause on Volkswagen Golf R sales was lifted earlier in 2024.
“We have got about 500 [cars] secured for the rest of the year, predicting an overall sales growth up to 1100 cars just for the Golf [R] itself,” said Mr Beckmann.
In good news for Golf R customers, Mr Beckmann said existing orders shouldn’t take longer than six months to fulfil.
In general, Australia continues to play an important role for Volkswagen’s R division globally.
“Last year we finished [as the] number one global market for T-Roc R and we’re intending to maintain that target for this year as well. And as you’re aware, we’re saying goodbye to Tiguan R towards the end of this year,” said Mr Beckmann.
“But at the same time, we’re welcoming Touareg as the new member into the R family.”
Volkswagen delivered 2900 T-Roc Rs and 3400 Tiguan Rs in 2023.
The Touareg R represents a new flagship in the facelifted Touareg (and R) range, priced from $129,990 before on-road costs. The new entrant to the R subdivision is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine mated to an electric motor.
