US to Send Indian Astronaut to ISS by Year-End, Confirms Ambassador Garcetti

Join the excitement as an Indian astronaut prepares to journey to the ISS by year-end, highlighting the growing India-US collaboration in space and technology.

In an exciting development for space enthusiasts, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti announced that an Indian astronaut will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) by the end of this year. This milestone aligns with the promise made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in 2023.

Speaking at the 248th Independence Day event of the United States, Garcetti also revealed that the NISAR project, a collaborative Earth-observing mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is on track to launch by year-end. The project aims to advance scientific understanding of natural hazards, climate change, and Earth’s surface changes.

Garcetti emphasized the importance of India-US collaboration in research and emerging technologies, highlighting how the strengths of both nations can be mutually beneficial. He cited the success of India’s Chandrayaan 3 mission, which landed on the Moon at a fraction of the cost of similar US missions, as an example of India’s innovative capabilities.

In the civilian nuclear energy sector, Garcetti expressed optimism about moving forward post-elections. He mentioned that sites in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have been designated for US companies to build nuclear reactors. However, he acknowledged the need to address concerns raised by these companies regarding India’s Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010, which ensures prompt compensation for victims of nuclear incidents.

This upcoming astronaut mission and the NISAR project mark significant steps in the growing partnership between India and the US, showcasing their shared commitment to space exploration and technological advancement.
