In a heartfelt message on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “I am overwhelmed and emotional! I did not even realise how 10 years passed under the shade of your affection. I had said that Maa Ganga had called me. Aaj Maa Ganga ne mujhe god le liya hai (today Maa Ganga has adopted me).”
Varanasi has been a critical battleground in Indian politics, witnessing a landmark contest in 2014 when Modi, then BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, triumphed over AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal by a margin of over 3 lakh votes. His subsequent victory in 2019 further cemented Varanasi as a BJP stronghold.
The demographics of Varanasi reveal a diverse constituency with 75% Hindus, 20% Muslims, and a mix of other religions. The urban-rural split is 65% to 35%, respectively, highlighting the city’s unique socio-economic landscape.
Modi’s tenure has seen significant efforts towards transforming Varanasi, often described as a city of spirituality and faith. “During the period of the Congress and INDI alliance, this city of spirituality and faith was always neglected, but we are working day and night with the resolution of building a divine and grand Kashi,” PM Modi stated on X. He emphasized his vision for a developed Varanasi contributing to the larger goal of a developed India and Uttar Pradesh.
The upcoming election, where Modi will face Congress candidate Ajay Rai for the third time, promises to be a keenly watched contest.
