The President of Sri Lanka has appointed two new governors.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed new Governors to the Southern and North Western Provinces.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena took oaths as the Governor of the Southern Province.

Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena previously served as the Governor of the North Western Province, after being appointed to the post by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in 2023.

Meanwhile, former Environment Minister Nazeer Ahamed was sworn in as the Governor of the North Western Province.

Last year, Nazeer Ahamed lost his Parliamentary seat and was removed as the Minister of Environment after the Supreme Court ruled that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress’ decision to expel him, for going against the party’s stance in several instances, was lawful.

Nazeer Ahamed along with Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena took oaths as governors before President Ranil Wickremesinghe today.
