BASL Urges Removal of Minister Tiran Alles Following Controversial Remarks

The recent statement made by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, during the Katukurunda STF training camp’s passing out parade, has sparked widespread condemnation from the legal fraternity and the public alike. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has taken a decisive stance against these remarks, highlighting the dangerous implications they carry for the country’s justice system and the rule of law.

Minister Alles’ assertion that “eliminating criminals from the country is not a sin” and his encouragement for law enforcement personnel to use their weapons without regard for due process is deeply concerning. Such statements not only contradict the fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution but also undermine the integrity of the criminal justice system.

In a strongly worded statement, the BASL expressed grave concern over the Minister’s remarks, emphasizing that justice must be administered within the framework of the law, through fair trials and due process. The association rightly points out that the authority to dispense justice lies exclusively within the jurisdiction of the courts, as mandated by the Constitution.

Moreover, the BASL highlights the disturbing trend of extrajudicial killings, custodial deaths, and incidents of torture perpetrated by law enforcement agencies, which have seen an alarming increase in recent times. Minister Alles’ statement only serves to perpetuate the misconception that justice can be administered arbitrarily, without adherence to legal procedures, thereby legitimizing impunity and undermining public trust in the rule of law.

The repeated dissemination of such misguided messages by the Minister not only erodes public confidence in law enforcement but also poses a serious threat to the principles of justice and accountability. As custodians of public security, government officials like Minister Alles have a duty to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all citizens.

Therefore, the BASL has called for the immediate retraction of Minister Alles’ statement and has urged the President to remove him from the portfolio of Public Security. The association argues that his repeated endorsement of impunity and disregard for the rule of law make him unfit to hold such a crucial office.

In reaffirming the principle that punishment must be meted out solely by the courts and that every individual has the right to a fair trial, the BASL underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding human rights. It is imperative that Sri Lanka’s legal system remains committed to ensuring justice for all, regardless of their status or circumstances.

In conclusion, the BASL’s stance against Minister Alles’ controversial remarks sends a clear message that the legal fraternity will not tolerate any actions or statements that undermine the rule of law and the principles of justice. The removal of Minister Alles from his position would serve as a necessary step towards upholding the integrity of Sri Lanka’s justice system and restoring public confidence in the rule of law.
