India’s External Affairs Ministry rebuked the US State Department’s Human Rights Report, labeling it as “deeply biased” and asserting that the Indian government places no significance on its findings.
The External Affairs Ministry criticized the recent Human Rights Report issued by the US State Department, denouncing it as “deeply biased” and asserting that the Indian government disregards its content. According to the report, which highlighted various incidents including the violence in Manipur and the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Indian authorities expressed skepticism, emphasizing a lack of understanding about the country’s dynamics. The report highlighted instances of abuse in Manipur, following ethnic conflict in May 2023, along with transnational repression cases such as the killing of Nijjar in Canada. At least 175 people were reported killed in Manipur, with over 60,000 displaced due to clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The MEA Spokesperson dismissed the report’s credibility, urging others to do the same. The report also referenced the Income Tax department’s searches at the Delhi and Mumbai offices of BBC, weeks after the release of a documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots. It further cited the killing of Nijjar in Canada as indicative of a pattern of extrajudicial actions by state agents. In response to the report, Robert Gilchrist from the US State Department called on India to uphold its human rights commitments.
