China Supports IAEA Efforts for Safety of Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

In the wake of recent drone attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP), China has voiced its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in ensuring the safety and security of nuclear facilities, emphasizing the need for international cooperation and restraint.

China’s permanent representative to the IAEA, Li Song, underscored the gravity of the situation at ZNPP, emphasizing that nuclear accidents transcend borders and demand utmost caution. The attacks on ZNPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, have raised concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities amid ongoing conflict.

The IAEA convened a special meeting at the request of Russia and Ukraine to address the attacks on ZNPP, which occurred on multiple occasions recently. Despite the damage caused, the IAEA affirmed that nuclear safety remained uncompromised.

Quoting China’s stance on the Ukraine crisis, Li reiterated China’s opposition to armed attacks on nuclear facilities and its support for the IAEA’s efforts to ensure nuclear safety in Ukraine. China has contributed to the IAEA’s technical assistance projects in Ukraine, emphasizing its commitment to international cooperation on nuclear safety.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for maximum restraint in the aftermath of the attacks, highlighting the escalating dangers to nuclear safety and security in Ukraine. While accusations have been made by both Russia and Ukraine regarding the attacks, the IAEA has refrained from taking a position on the matter.

In light of the situation, China called on all relevant parties to abide by international laws, refrain from actions endangering nuclear facilities, and facilitate the IAEA’s role in ensuring safety and security. International cooperation and adherence to established protocols are crucial in mitigating risks and maintaining nuclear safety in conflict zones.
