Despite announcing her retirement from the international scene, basketball superstar Lauren Jackson has been named in the extended Opals squad for the Paris Olympics. Coach Sandy Brondello has included her in the 26-player squad, which will participate in training camps, tours, and fixtures leading up to the Games commencing on July 26.
The final 12-player team to contend for medals in Paris will be chosen from this extended squad. Despite her retirement announcement in February after Australia secured their Olympic berth with a decisive victory over Germany in Brazil, the 42-year-old Jackson, arguably Australia’s greatest basketball player, finds herself back in contention. She expressed her retirement sentiments following Australia’s qualification, stating, “I’m done,” reflecting on the significance of concluding her national career in Brazil, where she previously tasted success in the Opals’ 2006 World Cup campaign.
Despite her retirement declaration, less than seven weeks later, Jackson has found herself named in a squad that boasts 11 members from the team that secured bronze at the 2022 World Cup. With a storied career that includes four Olympic medals, including three consecutive silver medals starting from her debut in Sydney 2000, Jackson’s return to the fold adds both experience and leadership.
Head coach Brondello commended all athletes selected for the Olympic squad, acknowledging their dedication to representing Australia on the international stage. She highlighted the exceptional talent within the squad, making the final selection of the 12-player team a challenging task.
The Opals, drawn into Pool B alongside Canada, Nigeria, and host nation France, face a competitive journey in pursuit of Olympic success.
