The officer in charge of Road Policing in Victoria has been caught by an unmarked speed camera, proving no one is immune.

A senior member of Victoria Police has admitted to being caught speeding by a hidden camera.

In a statement released to media “in the interests of transparency,” Victoria Police said Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir was detected travelling at 58km/h in a marked 50km/h zone in Parkville, in Melbourne’s north.

Mr Weir, who was driving an unmarked police vehicle on Manningham Street, believed he was travelling in a 60km/h zone at the time.

“I take full responsibility for this error and am mortified it has occurred,” Mr Weir said in a written statement.

“I’ve spent my entire career advocating for road safety and this incident proves nobody is immune from making a mistake on the road.”

As Assistant Commissioner, Mr Weir is in charge of Road Policing Command, answering to Specialist Operations Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam, who sits below Chief Commissioner of Police Shane Patton APM in police command.

While eligible for a warning due to his good driving record, Mr Weir will pay the $337 fine and take the demerit point.

“No matter how far over the limit, all speeding is unacceptable. For someone in my position this is especially true. I am truly sorry,” he said.
