The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald have been recognised for their leading coverage of the technology sector with reporters David Swan and Tim Biggs taking home several of the 2024 Journalism IT Awards’ most prestigious titles.
Announced at an awards ceremony in Sydney on Friday, technology editor Swan was awarded the highest title of best journalist overall, known as the ‘Gold Lizzy’, best telecommunications journalist, best cybersecurity journalist and was highly commended for the best technology issues category.
Swan’s accolades recognised his exclusive reporting on TikTok that revealed it was harvesting Australians’ private data without consent, his coverage of cyberattacks that stole data from St Vincent’s Hospital, and the inner chaos of Optus during its national outage late last year.
Meanwhile, Biggs’ coverage broke down how new developments from the world’s largest tech companies affected people’s everyday lives, which saw The Age and The Herald awarded the title of best consumer technology coverage.
“It’s especially gratifying to win in the consumer tech space where a lot of our work goes into making sure we have the important issues covered for a general audience, and stay entertaining, but are rigorous and extensive enough for the tech heads,” Biggs said.
