Sydney Swans vs Melbourne Demons Preview
In a showdown between modern-day rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Thursday’s game carries significant weight for two teams considered last year’s biggest underachievers.
Sydney Swans are the slight favourites with most betting apps at $1.85 whilst the Demons despite being the better team last year are at $1.92 in what bookies think will be a tight encounter.
The Swans faced scrutiny following an embarrassing Grand Final defeat against Geelong, sparking doubts about their form heading into 2023 amidst talks of a potential hangover and Buddy Franklin’s looming retirement. Their season began roughly, with just one win from their initial four games, before coach John Longmire orchestrated a late-season surge, securing a last-minute spot in the top eight.
However, Sydney’s finals campaign was short-lived, suffering a narrow defeat to Carlton in the elimination round due to accuracy issues in front of goal. Similarly, Melbourne experienced a rollercoaster season, finishing fourth overall but ultimately losing a heartbreaking match to the Blues in the Semi-Finals.
Off-field issues from last season continue to overshadow the new season, with discussions around the club’s culture and Clayton Oliver still prominent. Despite this, Melbourne boasts considerable talent, with Christian Petracca emerging as one of the game’s brightest midfielders and Max Gawn maintaining his status as the premier ruckman, provided he remains injury-free.
Meanwhile, Sydney strengthened their squad with the addition of former Melbourne ruckman Brodie Grundy, while expectations are high for young talents like Errol Gulden and Nick Blakey to shine. Although Melbourne convincingly won both encounters against Sydney last year, this season feels like a fresh start for the Swans and Longmire.
Observing Melbourne’s struggles to move the ball and operate effectively in the forward half last season, questions arise about their ability to match Sydney, or other top clubs, in terms of inside 50 opportunities this year. With Kozzie Pickett and potentially Harrison Petty sidelined for the opening round, pressure mounts on Gawn and the likes of Jacob van Rooyen, especially with Clayton Oliver in contention.
With home advantage and a point to prove, the Swans appear to be a solid bet in what promises to be a closely contested game.
