Como Gardens: Sprawling estate has its own mini train line and vintage car museum

The iconic Como Gardens in Melbourne’s outer east featuring a miniature train line and vintage car museum is revving up for a sale.

The 6.12ha estate includes sprawling botanic gardens and creeks at 79 Basin-Olinda Rd, The Basin, is on the market with a $4m-$4.2m asking range.

In 1873, original owners William and Kate Chandler established the property.

The Chandler Highway was named in honour of their son Alfred who became a state government minister.

McGrath Croydon’s Ross Sullivan said Como Gardens’ current owners George and Pat Hetrel purchased in 1996, building a four-bedroom house, excavating the ornamental lake and installing the railway line with its own station and ticket booth.

George, a car collector, set up a museum of historic cars, model aeroplanes and other objects, some of which have recently been auctioned.

Across the past two decades, he and his wife hosted open days to raise funds for organisations like St John Ambulance and The Basin’s CFA brigade.

Como Gardens’ small locomotive and its five carriages, capable of carrying up to 30 passengers, will included in the sale.

Mr Sullivan described the home as “one of a kind”.

“There’s not many properties that have a 650m train line on them,” he said.

He has received inquiries from interstate buyers including many who are “just wanting to live there and enjoy the gardens”.

Como Gardens is located at the at the base of the Mt Dandenong Ranges and boasts 130 species of visiting birds.

A paddock, gazebo, barn, three ponds, windmill and bee hives are among the other highlights.

The railway line has been enjoyed by many visitors across the years.


Nature lovers will appreciate the fruit and citrus trees, vegetable garden, green house

and the garden’s automatic irrigation system.

Inside the house, there’s a timber-fitted kitchen with marble benches, multiple living and dining spaces, two bathrooms and a wood heater.

A pair of covered outdoor entertaining areas include one with a mains gas-connected barbecue, the other featuring bistro blinds and two electric heaters.
