The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics has released its January domestic airline on-time performance report, uncovering that Virgin Australia experienced the highest flight cancellation rate at 5.4%, while Qantas and Jetstar had cancellation rates below 2.5%.

The report delves into regional networks, revealing that QantasLink narrowly outpaced Virgin Regional Airlines with a cancellation rate of 2.6%, just 0.01% higher. The on-time arrival performance for the Qantas network, including QantasLink, stood at 76.6%, while the entire Virgin Australian network recorded 67.9%.
Mount Isa and Emerald Airports emerged as top-performing airports nationwide in January, boasting high on-time departure and arrival rates. Mount Isa saw over 83.3% of flights arriving on time, while 79.2% of planes departing from Emerald adhered to their schedules.
However, Mackay Airport in central Queensland recorded the lowest percentage of on-time arrivals at 55.1%, while Proserpine Airport had the lowest percentage of on-time departures at 54.9%.
The report also highlighted the top-performing routes, with flights between Townsville and Cairns standing out. Skytrans was identified as the worst-performing airline, experiencing a 15.4% flight cancellation rate and only 63.8% of flights departing on time.
As Brisbane Airport prepares for increased traffic during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, airlines have scheduled an additional 64 flights to Melbourne and Sydney to accommodate fans. Despite concerns about possible thunderstorms and high temperatures, the airport anticipates a substantial influx of passengers from North and Central Queensland during the tour.
