Three recent cases, involving two men in their 60s and a woman in her 70s, have prompted the health advisory. All three patients were hospitalized but have since been discharged. Dr. Isabel Hess from Sydney Local Health District highlighted that Legionnaires’ disease is contracted through contaminated water particles from air-conditioning units.
Emphasizing that the disease doesn’t spread person-to-person, Dr. Hess outlined symptoms, including fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath. Urging prompt medical attention for those experiencing symptoms, she noted that diagnosis involves urine or sputum tests and chest X-rays, often requiring antibiotic treatment in hospital.
NSW Health has taken preventive measures, disinfecting and cleaning cooling towers in the affected area, with one tower at the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus testing positive for legionella bacteria. Routine monthly testing of cooling towers is emphasized to ensure early identification and swift corrective actions.
Building owners are reminded to comply with the NSW Public Health Regulation 2022 regarding the operation and maintenance of cooling towers. NSW Health reiterates the importance of seeking medical assistance for those feeling unwell or displaying symptoms.
