Urgent Call for Electricity Conservation as Daily Demand Surges

With a surge in daily electricity consumption exacerbated by the ongoing dry weather conditions, the public is urged to exercise caution and conserve electricity resources.

Noel Priyantha, spokesperson for the Ceylon Electricity Board, reveals that the current dry spell has led to a notable increase in daily electricity demand, with consumption rising by 3 to 4 gigawatt hours. This surge comes amidst a drop in hydropower generation, which now stands at 21 percent.

Despite the water capacity of hydroelectric power plants remaining at 83 percent, other renewable energy sources like solar power and wind farms contribute only a fraction of the total electricity capacity, at 4.5 percent and 5 percent, respectively.

In light of these circumstances, the spokesperson emphasizes the importance of using electricity sparingly to alleviate strain on the power grid and ensure sustainable energy consumption practices.
